Waste Reduction and Diversion
WHY IT MATTERS
Building construction and demolition waste contributes to approximately 40% of solid waste in developed countries.[1] However, the greatest footprint occurs during the operational cycle, when products are delivered, consumed and waste is then hauled away and recycled or landfilled.
WHAT WE ARE DOING
According to a 2016 Sustainability Survey, the majority of Commerce Court tenants have rated waste reduction and recycling as the top priority. A comprehensive, award-winning recycling program is in place ensuring the majority of waste produced at Commerce Court is reduced or diverted.
In addition, an annual, third-party audit is conducted from which results and recommendations are communicated to Commerce Court tenants and vendors on a regular basis.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

- Reduce packaging by avoiding single packaged sugar, cream, and milk
- Reduce ink by changing your printer setting to ‘draft mode’ and reduce paper by setting your printer default to print double-sided. You will save both money and resources
- Recycle cardboard by marking appropriately and placing in the kitchen area. Avoid contaminating any paper product with liquid or food
- Repurpose household or office items through a creative campaign in the office that will encourage your co-workers to rethink waste
